David Smyth, son of our friends and SDS Canada board members Mike and Kim Smyth and SDS patient, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. His doctors are urgently seeking possible matches to screen for a badly needed bone marrow transplant. We'd like to ask all our friends and family to please help us get the word out to as many people to help and become a bone marrow donor. Becoming a donor is as simple as getting a cheek swab performed at the nearest Canadian Blood Services clinic any day of the week. For more information please visit OneMatch at the following web address. A link to an article in the Oakville Beaver “David Smyth needs a life-saving bone marrow match” about David can be found here.
Shwachman Diamond Syndrome Canada has received an invitation to all Canadian patients with SDS, children and adults to help participate in the Canadian Inherited Marrow Failure Registry (CIMFR). At the moment there are 36 participants with SDS in the registry, but more are always welcome and appreciated. Summary of the Canadian Inherited Marrow Failure Registry can be found here. Please see here for more information
On Tuesday May 20th, golfers came together at the Carlisle Golf and Country Club to enjoy a round and to help raise $34,991.19 for Swachman Diamond Syndrome Canada! Thank you all of our sponsors who have helped us so much. What is Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome? Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) is a rare genetic disorder that occurs in approximately one in 50,000 births. SDS affects many organs in the body and the symptoms may vary from individual to individual. The primary features of SDS include: bone marrow problems (leading to inadequate production of some types of white blood cells), a defect in the pancreas (leading to difficulties in digesting food), skeletal abnormalities, and short stature. Other, secondary, features may affect some but not all people with SDS. People with SDS are at risk for serious, sometimes fatal, complications such as severe infections, acute myelogenous leukemia and bone marrow failure. |
